New Abattoir for Shetland
14/02/2007
The Shetland Islands is set to open Scotland’s first community owned abattoir in a £2.4 million council project.
The Shetland Development Trust and the Shetland Islands Council will work together to create the abattoir, which will be owned by a Community Development Trust.
The islands' two existing slaughterhouses, in Gott and Dunrossness, have been unable to cope with demand and it is hoped the new facility will support the islands' meat industry and protect crofters' livelihoods.
