Green Card for Capital's Shops and Shoppers
26/02/2007
Supermarket shoppers could receive loyalty points for buying locally-sourced food in a new environmental scheme planned for Edinburgh.
Incentives for buying more environmental and locally-produced foods will be part of a raft of initiatives aimed at reducing packaging waste in the city.
Food shops and supermarkets will also be rated on their green credentials, such as the number of plastic bags that are handed out at checkouts, to give consumers more idea of what retailers are doing to improve their environmental record.
The ‘green concordat’ scheme is part of the Edinburgh Labour Party's manifesto for the elections and would be operated by the council.
