Scotland’s True Heritage Pubs – Pub Interiors of Special Historic Interest – Michael Slaughter (Camra Ltd, £4.99)
This 95-page guide to Scottish heritage pubs gives a fascinating insight into the historic interiors of more than 100 pubs and bars across Scotland.
Published by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), the guide includes pubs that have barely changed for more than 40 years and include fittings of national significance – from Art Deco masterpieces to Victorian grandeur.
Entries include Edinburgh’s Oxford Bar, made famous as the watering hole of writer Ian Rankin’s character, Inspector Rebus, and the Canny Man’s that boasts a Champagne menu. It also highlights the Globe Inn, in Dumfries, which was said to be Robert Burns' favourite pub, and the Railway Tavern, in Kincardine, which is Scotland’s smallest public bar – housed inside a tiny terraced house.
Take this guide with you on your next pub-crawl and you’ll soon realise that your favourite local has more to offer than just a good pint.
