A UK supermarket chain has announced plans to sell Halal chocolate at its Glasgow stores.
Morrisons supermarket will stock Halal chocolate at 26 of its stores across the country, including Glasgow, Bolton, Bradford, Bristol and Leicester, to cater for the two million Muslims living in the UK. The Halal food market is estimated to be worth some £2 billion a year.
The chocolate, made by East London company, Ummah Foods, is manufactured to be compatible with the tenets of Islam, so it does not contain animal fats. Though it is already sold in London branches of Tescos, the company said that this was the “largest supermarket distribution deal to date”.
