Veggie Pioneer Celebrates his Centenary

In one of the best adverts for the vegetarian lifestyle, the founder of Henderson’s restaurant in Edinburgh has just blown out the candles on his 100th birthday cake.

James McLaren Henderson set up Henderson’s Salad Table more than four decades ago to promote and sell organic and natural food from the family’s farm in East Lothian.

With the motto “eat better, live better” it's believed the Edinburgh eatery was the first vegetarian and organic restaurant in Scotland.

Surrounded by children, grand children and great-grand children, James marked his century at the start of May and the telegram from the Queen was read out at the celebration.
