Anyone for Asian Haggis?
03/05/2007
The flavour of the east has helped Findlay’s of Portobello come top in a new category in the Scottish Haggis Championships.
The Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association has introduced the “Haggis with a Difference” prize to its annual awards this year – and encouraged a huge range of unnusual recipes.
Findlay’s took the award with its Asian Haggis, overcoming competition from a Drambuie Haggis, Balti Haggis Rolls, Jamaican Rum and Raisin Haggis, Haggis with Mango and Ginger, Malt Whisky Haggis Truffle and Chilli Haggis.
Findlay’s were inspired by an Indian customer who wanted Haggis with a twist for their wedding.
Using genuine Asian spices and herbs instead of the traditional salt and pepper, the butcher came up with the fusion alternative, which was a winner at both the wedding and award ceremony.
Crazy creations aside, the quest for the best traditional haggis in Scotland will reach a crescendo on May 13 when the overall winner is announced at the Dewars Centre in Perth.
