Cricket and Curry Unite Communities

04/07/2007
Providing the catering for the India v Pakistan cricket international friendly at Titwood on Glasgow’s south side united two rival supporters this week.

Restaurateurs Imtiaz Aslam and Rajesh Saraf, both senior operators in Glasgow’s Ashoka chain of Indian restaurants, were pitted against each other in their bid to cook up a treat for players. Pakistani Imtiaz Aslam, who runs Glasgow's Ashoka Bearsden, catered for the Indian cricket team, despite being an avid Pakistan supporter, while Indian Rajesh Saraf, fed the Pakistan team, despite supporting India.

Imtiaz said: "The great thing about sports events like the cricket match is that it brings countries and colleagues together to enjoy a great sporting occasion. Whilst I support Pakistan, I have many Indian friends – some I would call family – and we know that we’ll have a great day out, enjoying the cricket and bringing both communities together over a delicious curry!”
